Five years ago my daughter came home from her first semester in college and she was a Face book fanatic. (She also brought home Sudoku from college and I am since a Sudoku fanatic)! My son, in high school at the time, soon joined the Face book bandwagon. I’m not allowed to see their Face books, but I suppose they are akin to a digital diary, so that is okay.

I’ve just recently become Linked In. While I am clearly still a novice (e.g. I can’t even be sure when I properly accepted an invitation!), it is one of the best business tools I have used in a long time. You are not allowed to invite new Linked in members with your website address, but I send a brief invite to decision makers at a number of Fortune 100 aerospace and defense companies explaining my role in the A2Z Metalworker, and most times, these people, who I have never met, accept my invitations. I have also never had as many new subscribers come to the Metalworker website (www.azmetalworker.com) to request subscriptions as I have had since becoming Linked In. Another interesting finding from a non-statistical analysis I’ve conducted? I believe that California business people are much more likely to Link in than others anywhere else in the United States. Men additionally are more likely to Link in than women are...Hmm!
Networking...can’t live without it. I don’t think we should believe its a necessary evil, though, nor something we don’t have time for. Not only is it enjoyable joining new associations and participating in the activities and volunteer work, but it inevitably leads to new associations and new business!
What’s next? Blogging, and I clearly need to learn more about this! Any hints or recommendations you have are welcome!
Our shop articles were so enjoyable and enlightening to write. After 5 years with the publication and an estimated 50 plus interviews with different machine shops, I find each and every shop unique, successful, and inspiring. Read about the shops in this issue; there are four of them, and please let them know what you thought.
Until next year, I wish you delightful holidays, and the beginning of a new year that is less taxing than 2009 was. God bless our troops, particularly during this time of year when it most difficult for them to be apart from their families.

Walter M. Schirra Jr. was one of the original seven astronauts and the only man to fly in the Mercury, Gemini and Apollo space programs.
The quick-witted Navy captain, who was known as Wally, was the fifth American in space at a time when NASA’s manned space program was young and untested. His Oct. 3, 1962, Mercury flight, which lasted 9 hours, 13 minutes and 11 seconds, was considered textbook-perfect.
